The Hungry Artist - VIDEO meets DINNER

Artist Aaron Rosenblum, with support from Nazzah Swenson and Lee Wai Chang, will host a series of evenings exploring some more unusual aspects of video production. We'll begin by exploring the art of the cooking show, learning some quick fire cooking while video taping a show for YouTube. Each session will be uploaded to YouTube that evening. Activities will evolve and change based on the interests of attending participants!

Red Lake Retrospect at Parkway Theater

In Progress is happy to announce that Red Lake's Project Preserve Program will be featured as part of Augsburg's College Where Condor Meets Eagle: Indigenous Bolivian and Native American Film Festival.

The screening will take place at the Parkway Theater on Sunday March 18th and will feature Life In The Seventh Prophecy, Indian Humor 3 and Red Lake - Our Sacred Heart.

Life In The Seventh Prophecy to Screen at Intermedia Arts

We are excited to say that Life In The Seventh Prophecy will be screened at Intermedia Arts as part of a New Indigenous Cinema Screening event.

The show will take place February 23-25, 2012

And will feature a series of film shorts by contemporary Indigenous filmmakers.

Life in the Seventh Prophecy is a docu-drama that looks at the seven sacred prophecies of the Anishinaabe and how young people are struggling with choices regarding their lives. This video has recently traveled the world and we are so proud to have it circle back to Minnesota for this special screening. We will keep you posted as we hear more - specifically regarding the time of the showing.

Studio Activities Begin February 13th!

Beginning the week of February 13th In Progress will open its doors to the public to offer a series of free workshop and mentorship sessions for the public. Activities range from open labs, where youth and their families can come in to work independently on creating digital stories to professional development sessions centered on small business development in the field of digital media.

OPEN STUDIO Wedensdays – Fridays 4-6PM / Saturdays 12-4PM
In Progress offers both access to digital artmaking tools (photo and video cameras) as well as multimedia computers and software. Volunteers are available to tour current exhibits, provide one to one instruction and provide feedback about projects you are working on.

Artist Yeeleng Vue will lead a series of music creation sessions in the music studio. Learn to write songs, perform and produce music with one of our most seasoned professionals.

Digital Me in Two Saint Paul Schools

We are excited to say that an entire team of artists have just returned to the Community School of Excellence and Farnsworth Aerospace School to provide a series of photography and video workshops as part of an extensive after-school program designed to introduce youth to the art of digital storytelling.

This winter Kao Na "Raynie" Vang and Pajar Vang will be teaching elementary and middle school youth at CSE while artists Aaron Rosenblum and LeeWai Chang are teaching at Farnsworth.

This program has been made possible through the generous contributions from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, COMPAS, and the Travelers Foundation.

I came across this link today while researching some information regarding First Nations filmmakers. I hadn't realized that my profile had been posted and I couldn't resist the read. I don't think about why In Progress matters to me much these days - too busy trying to keep the work moving forward and enjoying the fact that I actually get to live this life of mine. I wanted to share with you this article, because when I read it - it reminded me of all the work still in front of us. As we end this year and move into the next, I promise to keep at it... Thank you - each and every artists that speaks with thoughtfulness, courage and hope. . . .

"Kristine Sorensen is a digital media producer and the founder and executive director of In Progress, a non-profit organization in Minnesota that supports the development of digital arts and youth leadership. She is nationally-recognized for this work, which focuses on the development of media-making by people who often are not represented in mainstream media – youth, tribal/migrant communities, inner-city neighborhoods, and rural townships.

Video Premiere at Farnsworth Aerospace School

On Wednesday, December 15th Farnsworth after school students celebrated the end of their first trimester by presenting their work to the entire after school community, staff and students. After we ate cake and ice cream to celebrate all the great work students had done in the after school program. In Progress students presented seven original videos, from a time lapse illustration instruction video to a video documentary talking about attitudes of encouragement at the school. Other students presented in hip hop dance, Hmong dance, and more. Look out for Farnsworth student videos being posted to the In Progress Youtube channel over the next couple of weeks!

A Big Move for In Progress

If you haven't heard yet, In Progress recently moved to a new location at 213 Front Avenue - just off of Rice Street in north-end, Saint Paul. It is a beautiful old storefront with a main floor (soon to be gallery/workshop space) and a sub-level computer lab and music studio. 6 months out of the year we will also be able to enjoy a courtyard patio with barbecue and fire pit. It is a dream come true and a reality filled with opportunity and challenge.

We have 10 volunteers that have put in a tremendous amount of time and energy into packing, painting, moving, cleaning, organizing, cementing, dry-walling, unpacking, demolishing, shining, decorating, planning, raking, shoveling, donating money, spending money, eating, laughing and more.

This is perhaps the hardest task In Progress has taken on since we first started identifying ourselves within physical spaces. We will be technically "dark" until we re-open as a new facility in January of 2012. This does not mean we are not busy. We are currently partnering with schools and community organizations to teach, organize and exhibit. Youth produced videos are traveling throughout the United States (we even have a screening up in the Arctic Circle this January). In Progress artist Kao Choua Vue will soon have her work screened on KTCA as part of the best of Minnesota.

2011 has taken In Progress all over the United States to work with youth and their communities to produce digital stories. We are so honored to have this life as an organization, to meet so many committed artists with stories that take your breath away, and be a part of a network of creative, motivated artists.

Thanks to everyone that has supported this process. And please come to visit us beginning January 9th when we will be back to teaching, mentoring and creating each and every day!

Presenting at NIEA Conference - Albuquerque

In Progress artist will be presenting with educator and school director Ronald Buckanaga at the 2011 National Education Association Conference being held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The workshop will take place on Thursday October 27th at 2:10 PM at the Albuquerque Convention Center. During the 60 minute presentation Kris and Ron will demonstrate using digital media as a tool for increasing student performance. Participants will learn how digital storytelling concepts are used to promote inquiry-based learning that engages students in core academic studies. Presentation includes curriculum overview, samples of videos, lesson plans, and advice for building your own media arts program.

Digital Me Begins September 18th

Digital Me will officially begin at the Community School of Excellence Monday September 18th. Artists Kao Choua Vue, Kao Na Vang, Laurine Chang and Yeeleng Vue will all bring their talents to teach more than 30 elementary and middle school students the art of self expression through photography and music creation.

Classes will take place each Monday and Wednesday this fall and will culminate in at the school's New Year celebration on December 16th, 2011.

In Progress would like to thank The Traveler's Foundation Arts & diversity Program, COMPAS General Fund Program and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council for providing the needed financial support for this new pilot program.

Pasos Desde El Salvador In Tower of Youth Film Fest

Congratulations to Estafania Alvarez as her video Pasos Desde El Salvador was recently accepted into the Tower of Youth FIlm Festival. Estafania made her video in honor her mother who migrated by foot from El Salvador to the United States. The video was produced as part of the Fresh Voices program held in Crookston Minnesota.

Kao Choua Vue Honored by MNTV

We want to congratulate IP artist Kao Choua Vue on having her film Tso Plig: Spirit Fly accepted into the 2011 MNTV Showcase! Her video tells the story of grief, hardship and the Hmong traditions that help the spirit move from this existence onto the next.

MNTV screens some of the best of Minnesota Independent film being produced in MInnesota. Spirit Fly will be screened on TPT this December as part of the second reel.

These Places Called Home

In Progress artists Kristine Sorensen and David Sam will lead a project with ten youth from White Earth, Red Lake, Leech Lake and Bois Forte Nations to collect stories about the valued relationships that exist for those that call the reservation "home." Participating youth will select others in their community to interview and will share their own stories about their most valued relationships.

Production will take place July 11th - 22nd. Anyone that lives up north and would like to contribute - please email Kris at ythmedia@aol.com.

The completed video footage will then be turned over to nationally recognized videographer Mona Smith that will prepare the footage to be part of an interactive screen that will accompany a traveling exhibit on treaties in Minnesota that is being made by Nat'l Museum of Am Ind, the Humanities and the Indian Affairs Council.

Stories will also be part of a website that will be made to accompany the site virtually and will provide more depth and more info more conveniently for folks. The National Museum of the American Indian is producing banners and a video, Allies is producing the website and videos. The completed exhibit is called "Why Treaties Matter: Self Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations".

Web Portfolio Workshop

This workshop is intended for intermediate level photographers interested in preparing their artwork for display on the web. Please join us in welcoming artist Yeeleng Vue as our resident electronic music instructor. He will be available to mentor young artists in many different types of music creation.

Labs will take place:

THURSDAYS 6-8PM beginning JUNE 16th.

Topics covered during labs include:

The music labs consist of artists who have a wide range of skills and talents. Singers, Rappers, Spoken word, etc... who are interested in learning music production. Labs will help develop their skills as music artist to be able to record, edit, and better themselves as a artist.

Artist Yeeleng Vue will be available Thursday evenings beginning June 16th to mentor artists in the following:

Programs and Equipment: Properly introduce to the programs we will be using and how we to set up equipment. Properly usage equipment to prevent problems.

Garageband: Making of instrumentals, steps and process.
History of music formation and westernize structure.

Protools 8:Usage for also creating instrumentals. Also great for recording soundings and editing vocals. A professional tool that a lot of professional artist uses.

Lyrics: Artist who would like to develop their skills as presenters and performance. Freestyle sessions and bring in some artist who have been in the real world.

Mentorship: To those individuals who want to develop their skill in another area. Will be discuss later in the summer.

IP Photo Exhibit at Traveler's Insurance

We are so excited to present our latest exhibit "The Revolving Closet" at Traveler's Insurance Company in downtown Saint Paul. The exhibit features twenty pieces that explore themes of personal and cultural identity experienced by Hmong artists. Video Editing at Red Lake High School

IP artist Kristine Sorensen will be heading northward to work with young artists from Red Lake High School. They are currently working on a video documentary about healing from grief and building an unbreakable circle of support. Youth will be editing all week - June 6 10, 2011 from 11AM-4PM (and beyond).

In addition to this workshop Kris Sorensen will also be working with youth from the local employment program to provide an overview of video and photography. It looks to be an exciting work week.

IP artist Kristine Sorensen had the privilege of working with the students of Circle of Nations School, April 6 - 8, 2011 in Wahpeton Minnesota. It is a school filled with art, artists and young native AMericans from all over the country. This activity has been especially meaningful as it provided us with opportunity to bring David Sam as a co-teacher. David went to Circle of Nations School a few years back and it has been an honor to bring him back as both a teacher and a role model for the students of the school. David will help edit this piece that expresses strength and resiliency through the symbolism of a strongly rooted tree.

IP Artist Pete Wong Visits Video Mentorships

Saturday the 12th, Pete Wong, an IP Artist who has just recently returned from several years working the movie business in Hong Kong, visited the video mentorship group. Pete shared many stories, from how he came to identify as a filmmaker, to his time in Hong Kong, and the direction he is taking now with his filmmaking. Later, we got working on some new and ongoing projects, with help from Pete. Eventually we ate some yummy pasta and watched "The Way to My Fathers Village" a video by a Chinese-Canadian artist Richard Fung.

IP Artists Learn Techniques to Record Good Sound for Video

Saturday evening IP Video Mentorships hosted a workshop on creating good audio for video productions. We learned about the basics of sound and recording, using the recording studio at IP, applications and types of microphones, and did some fun activities to begin using these lessons in our own productions! Attending and participating were Sai Thao, Serina Vue, Raynie Vang, Lee Wai Chang, Lee Wai's younger cousin, Mainyoua Lor, and Eric Akakpo.

Later we had make your own pizza night and were joined by another In Progress artist, Gaona Xiong!

IP Artists Raise $1200 to travel to New York

Congratulations to Savannah, Kaya, Cecilia and their families on raising the travel money required to get them to NYC for the upcoming Smithsonian Native American Film Festival. They raised donations through a series of fundraisers, dinners and more-- a lot of work as many of us know.

Four Directions Showcase - January 13th

IP Artists Present at Mille Lacs State of the Band

We are excited to announce that the video "Non-Removable" will be screened at the 2011 State of the Band address scheduled to take place this coming Tuesday. This is exciting news as this video is expected to reach 1500 people locally in this one day event.

The video represents the voices of the young people of the Mille Lacs Lake tribe, and the concerns they have about the future of their identity as a unified band of people.

Fresh Voices Retreat

Join artists Kristine Sorensen, Cristina Rodriguez and Becca Rodriguez for a Fresh Voices POT LUCK get-together at the Micah Retreat Center - just 10 miles outside of Crookston. We will get together Saturday, January 8th from 1PM until 6PM to eat, review artwork, select show images and complete final preparations for the upcoming Spring event.

Please bring something to share and be prepared to help make the final plans for our spring showcase. Some photo shoots will also take place on this date - so please come prepared. Everyone is welcome!

PHO & Photo Presentations

IP artists that have been working with Instructor Raynie from In Progress's Photo Workshops, will have the opportunity to present their artwork and explain the significance of their photo series to the public. Work will be shared from artists from ages 12 to 18, that have worked hard to put together a series of photos that tell a story about them. Each artist will present their own artistic vision for their work and participate in a group critique session.

There will be homemade pho, and families and friends are welcome to join.

Photography Mentorships with IP artist Raynie Vang

Join IP artist Raynie Vang as she provides mentorship in the area of digital photography to youth and adults. She will teach participants how to use different light sources as well as manual camera functions that allow you to "light paint" with your camera. Estefania Alvarez Honored at the Walker Art Center

In Progress artist Estefania Alvarez had her video Pasos Desde El Salvador exhibited at the Walker Art Center as part of the Twin Cities Youth Media Network's Annual Film & Video Festival.

Estefania attended the video and even went up on stage to answer questions from the audience. Estafania joined In Progress this summer as part of the Fresh Voices program in Crookston Minnesota. Her work is beautiful and we expect to see more of her talents as time goes on.

Artists Sai Thao, Kao Na "Raynie" Vang and Mee Thao led students from the Four Directions Charter School through a unique portraiture workshop where they learned how lighting, camera technique and make-up can bring out the glamour.

Spoken Word Videos Produced at Little Wound High School

IP artists Kristine Sorensen and Aaron Rosenblum had the opportunity to work with students from Little Wound High School to produce a series of video shorts that address the challenges faced by youth living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The students brought their talents as writers and orators to produce poetic stories. Seventeen students from the school were selected to produce the shorts which will later be shown to the entire community.

IP artist Kristine Sorensen is currently working with students from the Bug O Nay Ge Shig School to produce a video short entitled Gakinaamashkawizi anishinaabeg (What Gives Us Strength as Anishinaabe People). The video demonstrate how young people are strengthened through a sense of belonging that develops through understanding the language, ceremonies and traditions practiced by the Anishinaabe.

Carrie Estey - Board Member Passes

On Friday, September 24th - renowned artist, community activist and friend, Carrie Estey passed away after a year-long struggle fighting Leukemia. Carrie had served on the board of directors since 2008 and was a strong advocate for the work of In Progress. In the early 1990's Carrie revived the tradition of Ojibwe pottery, teaching youth and adults across Minnesota this once lost art form.

She was director of the Mille Lacs History Museum. She worked for Bemidji State University, and was an arts educator. Carrie was blessed with two children and many grand children.

She helped begin our work at the Bug O Nay Ge Shig School and Red Lake High School.

She was a beautiful person and we will hold our memories of her forever!

Ripple Effect Exhibit Planning

In Progress artists will meet to plan the upcoming art crawl “The Ripple Effect”. This year, three generations of teachers and students will come together to prepare an exhibition that shows what they have learned from one another over the past three years. Artist will meet to come up with deadlines, plan prep work, submit artwork, etc. If you can’t make it to the meeting please message Raynie Vang on facebook or via email Raynie.

The next meeting will take place Friday September 10th in Studio 301 at In Progress 6-8PM

IP Artist Honored at Tower of Youth Festival

Congratulations to Savannah Parisien whose video "I Am Anishinaabe" will be presented at the 14th Annual Tower of Youth FIlm Festival to be held in Sacarmento CA on OCtober 1, 2010.

Savannah lives in Nett Lake Village and is part of the Ogichidaakweg Program. She is currently working on completing her second video about her experience living in two cultures.

Savannah Parisien Receives Award

In Progress artist Savannah Parisien just won 3rd Place in the 2010 Josiah Youth Media Festival for her work "I Am Anishinaabe." Savannah received the plaque featured above as well as a $50 gift certificate to B&H Photo. The Josiah Youth Media Festival takes place every June in San Antonio TX.
